The field of eight horses has two strong favorites, who finished as the top two in this year’s Kentucky Derby. Belmont Stakes.
Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby in May but ed up an opportunity for the Triple Crown by sitting out of the Preakness Stakes. He has three wins in six career starts, two of which came in 2025.
Journalism finished second in the Kentucky Derby and won the Preakness Stakes, which would have set him up for a chance at the Triple Crown had he won at Churchill Downs. He has won a total of five races in his career through seven starts, including three this year.
The two horses have not competed in the same race before or since the Kentucky Derby.
Baeza notably finished third in the Kentucky Derby behind the two established stars of the sport and finished second to Journalism in the Santa Anita Derby this year. He has competed in five total races, earning one win, two second place finishes, and one third place finish.

Rodriguez has won two of his four events in 2025 and had only competed in one race prior to this year. He has finished in the top three in each of his five career races.
Hill Road won the Grade III Peter Pan Stakes in May, one of his two career victories. He finished third in the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby in March in his only other competition in 2025.
Crudo is a younger horse with just three total races, each of which came in 2025. He won two of them, at Keeneland and Sir Barton Stakes, as well as finishing fourth in a maiden special race at Gulfstream Park.
